bakar is perfect and has everything you need: validated parking, clean working equipment, racquetball courts, a climbing wall, overnight lockers... i'm very, very happy, i cant wait until my name comes up for a full membership.
This gym is snottier than Sports Club LA, Equinox, and all those other poshy gyms. There is actually a 6 MONTH WAITING LIST to get in! And once you're done waiting, you only get to go in between 9am-2pm Monday through Friday. You can't use it on the weekends or anytime at night. WTF? What is so exclusive about this place?
I'm not a full member of the gym - Once in awhile, I pay the nominal $10 for a day pass which lets me use the squash courts (it also gives me access to the rest of the gym, but I'm not big into working out at a gym). The squash courts are clean and well kept, and best of all, the $10/day is a steal!
Looks like our tax dollars are going to good use! Holy crap, UCSF sure found a way to spend a lot of money - this gym is beautiful! They have top of the line machines and a swanky looking decor. They have both an indoor AND outdoor pool, a rock climbing wall, squash court AND basketball court! The locker rooms are big and spacious, and most importantly, clean!
The Bakar UCSF gym is a "community" gym, which is great because I can chit chat with most of the regulars, and the people at the front always greet me with a smile when I come in. Also, the members who go here aren't gross and creepy like alot of the patrons I encountered at Gold's and 24. I can stretch and do squats without pervs staring at me. Everything is clean, too! They have staff that goes around cleaning hte equipment after you're done. You def don't see that at chain gyms. I mainly do cardio, so I can't really assess the weights section, but I've seen alot of big muscular men lifting there, so if they have a body like that, I'm sure that section is good.
For a UC College gym, this place is REALLY nice. All the cardio machines have tvs attached to them, the locker rooms are really clean and well maintained, they have a full basketball court and a pool on the ROOF! Can you believe it? The cardio machines even look towards SBC Park, so if you don't want to watch TV, you have a nice view.
I live all the way over in the Marina, but will make the long journey all the way over here on Saturdays to play basketball. They have two courts, and there's two good crowds generally from late morning to early afternoon.
