Good gym, fun and challenging classes with energetic instructors. The boxing/kickboxing
classes do become boring after a while and the membership is on the pricey side. On the

The ultimate! Very clean locker room, workout floor, and pool area. Second floor cardio machines (like at least 40), Private & Clean showers, good parking, nice staff. Many classes, clean floors.
They could use a steam and sauna room, for this I can only give them a 9/10. - by anonymous on Oct 15, 2009 at 05:41 PM

Neutral Review: for 24 Hour Fitness
Has the potential to be a real nice club IF they mop the mens room once/hour (Very dirty / disgusting), make sure members wipe off machines after use (its a very busy gym, many members sweat on the equipment and just leave), but for the Costo price of $12/month it attracts all kinds of people. + Nice size gym, many machines, benches, steam and sauna room and very large pool. - no outside sun bathing, no towel service, must bring your own lock for locker, zero bathroom amenities (soap, shampoo, shaving cream, aftershave) - by anonymous on Oct 15, 2009 at 05:36 PM

Remember your high school gym? smelly, dirty & disgusting, you can relive it here! Very small and over priced compared to area gyms that offer so much more. Staff is very friendly to new members, but after a month or two it wears off, and you're treated like an old rag. They have a sign in their lobby saying if you don't like it here, we'll get you a free pass to another gym! Great gym if you like to pay and not use it, or just use their urinated steam room. - by anonymous on Oct 15, 2009 at 05:18 PM

Awesome awesome gym! All the equipment is so nice, and it is NEVER crowded which I love. Compared to all those meat-market style gyms where you have to wait to use every little thing, Forma rocks!! All the trainers are so great too. - by anonymous on Sep 01, 2009 at 09:35 AM

This is the best gym in Walnut Creek by far, and one of the coolest gyms I have ever been to! It has such an amazing variety of equipment, from Kettlebells and TRX to a good old-fashioned punching bag that I can smack the !@#$& out of. I hate getting stuck in the same boring routine... It completely takes the fun out of exercise and it makes it a lot easier to plateau and stop getting results. Everything here is brand new, state-of-the-art, and designed for personal training, so it is truly possible to get a phenomenal workout in less than 45 min, and have a lot of fun while doing it. I feel like I'm training at a celebrity gym when I'm here... it is all so nice, and the bathrooms look like something out of a nice hotel! - by anonymous on Aug 17, 2009 at 07:52 AM

For the bare minimal in a gym, they sure charge a lot. Since it is so close to my house, I never fussed about there only be the basics, but it is extremely frustrating that much of the time the machines are taken, and there is NEVER staff there when you have a problem, question, etc...they don't come in at all Saturday and Sunday and only a few hours Monday-Friday. Not only that, but the staff I have come in contact with are quite rude. I left this gym for 24 Hour Fitness and my only regret is that I didn't do it sooner! - by anonymous on Jul 14, 2009 at 06:44 PM

Ghetto. gHeTtO. ghetto GHETTO. ghet0000000. I don't know if I can say that enough. It's in the shadiest part of Oakland filled with the shadiest people. Need an example? I saw two guys get in a fight over a set of WEIGHTS. I left my locker unlocked for 2 minutes while I went to go take a piss, and someone ran off with my gym bag. I've come out of here and seen a car with it's window smashed in. GHETTO. - by anonymous on Dec 29, 2008 at 11:16 PM

I love this gym! It is huge and has everything: a pool, steam room, spa, tons of machines, and helpful friendly staff. One point for the very helpful and nice community of climbers here, who are always willing to help my retarded self out.

Plus 3 points for their student night every third Friday of the month.

Minus one point for the fact it gets crowded sometimes, and minus 5 points for how insanely crowded it gets on Tuesdays.

Plus one point for the free wireless they have, so I can be a nerd and use my computer at the gym

Plus one million points for all the HOT guys I get to stare at.

Not sure what all these points add up to, or even the point of them... but go to Berkeley Ironworks NOW! - by starbella on Dec 29, 2008 at 03:28 PM

GHETTO with a capital G! It's cheap, but after seeing a flabby, naked 300 pound man drying his pubes in the hand dryer, I'm going to need to start shelling out hundreds of dollars for a shrink to get that image out of my head. - by anonymous on Dec 29, 2008 at 02:22 PM

The gym is big and has alot of machines, but the fact that its always packed cancels that out. There's alot of machines, but also alot of people, which means I usually have to wait. They have a nice basketball court, which I still have yet to use because people are always on it when I'm there. Also alot of people just stand around talking not even working out, taking up even more space and get in my way when I'm trying to move from machine to machine. - by anonymous on Dec 29, 2008 at 12:28 PM

Positive Review: for Club One Inc
You'll lose sense of reality here. When you walk into the gym and step out of the busy, bustling city center, you will feel like you stepped into a whole new world - the club is so open and spacious, and you no longer have to feel like you need to watch where you walk.

They have lots of cardio machines, and TVs everywhere.

I get in a quick cardio workout, then a shower in their nice locker rooms, and hop onto BART just a few blocks away and get back on with my day. - by anonymous on Dec 29, 2008 at 11:29 AM

These guys will take your credit card and suck it for all it's worth. If you do sign up, which I don't reccomend, make sure to read the fine print in the contract, because you are signing your soul away - when you sign up, you are not signing up for a gym. You're signing up for a THREE YEAR LOAN! Your monthly fee is not a gym membership fee, but it's a payment to your loan! And because it's a LOAN, you're not even allowed to cancel until the whole loan is paid off over the 3 years! Cancelling your credit card doesn't help either, because it will affect your credit score! - by anonymous on Dec 28, 2008 at 11:48 PM

$120/mo? No thanks. Everyone spending that kind of money for a pretentious gym should donate their money to a better cause - like feeding the starving children in Africa instead of yourselves, then you won't need to go to the gym. - by anonymous on Dec 28, 2008 at 10:07 PM

I pay over $100 a month, and nothing here is ever working! The sauna and steam rooms always seem to be out of order, and there are kids running crazy everywhere. I like this 24 location better than the other ones in SJ. It's clean and well ventilated, which doesn't sound like much, but for 24s, that's hard to find. They have lots of machines, and the cardio ones seem to be much newer than the other clubs. - by anonymous on Dec 28, 2008 at 01:40 PM

Chad Reeves here is the best personal trainer. After hearing so many positive things about him, I booked a session (you need to do it way ahead of time, because he is really really busy and has lots of standing appointments). The session was amazing! He pushed me just the right amount without going over the top, and was really motivating. I can't afford to train with him too often, but he gave me a routine that I've been doing on my own, and I've already lost 6 pounds! - by anonymous on Dec 28, 2008 at 01:24 PM

 Positive Review: for Combat Fitness
I really really hate gyms, which is exactly why I really really like Combat Fitness! It's not a typical gym - it's kickboxing and martial art classes which work out my body much more than any single piece of gym equipment ever could. The people in the class are all friendly and nice, but not in the perverted way where they are hitting on you. They really welcome beginners, and no one passes judgement if you suck (like me). I can't get enough of this place! - by kimberly on Dec 28, 2008 at 01:12 PM

Seems like no one has a single bad thing to say about this gym, and I agree. Things I like about it: 1) The place is HUGE so I always feel like I have enough personal space I don't feel crowded on when I work out. 2) Unlimited towels! I sweat alot, and towels are a necessity for me. I think I go through 3 or 4 towels each time I'm here. 3) The locker rooms. They are really luxurious, and a steam is a great way to relax and wind down after a hard workout. - by anonymous on Dec 28, 2008 at 11:40 AM

This gym has it all! It's really spacious, so it never feels crowded, and I never have to wait. It's a great gym for women who are self conscious about working out (like me!), since they have a women's only area. They also have hot tubs and saunas in the locker rooms, so you don't have to waddle around in your swim suit in front of men. The gym is dirty, and I like it. Super clean gyms freak me out, and they make me afraid to sweat. Everyone at those gyms look so perfect, it makes me think that *I* have to be perfect. 24 Hour makes me feel like it's okay to be my gross sweaty self, and no one will judge me for it. I can grunt and make all the weird faces I want when doing weights, and can pant and gasp like there's no tomorrow on the treadmills. Zumba Rocks! I've always seen a crowd at the class, but have never tried it... until this morning. I just took my first Zumba class here with Sabrina, and I'm already feeling the sore coming on! this class is pretty popular, since it was packed with all different types of people. They have several instructors who rotate throughout the class, so I got a different style and pace throughout, so the hour and a half class didn't get boring or tedious at all. I am definitely coming back next week! - by anonymous on Dec 27, 2008 at 05:41 PM

I've never done rock climbing before, but my coworkers were always talking about it so they finally dragged me here one saturday. I took the Beginning Climbing Course which taught me both climbing and bouldering techniques and how to belay. The class size was small (only 6 people in mine), and afterwards, he spent some time individually with each of us to make sure we were ok. I'm a small girl. 5'4, 120 pounds. This means that the treadmill should not feel like it's going to break when I run faster than 7mph on it, but that's exactly what happens when I do that here. Everything here is old! The treadmill starts shaking when I run too fast on it (thus limiting my workout), and the ellipticals squeak and are really jerky. - by anonymous on Dec 27, 2008 at 12:03 AM

I just transferred from the 24 Hour in Larkspur to this gym, and it's a huge difference. Here, I never need to wait for a machine, and when i get on, I can use them for as long as I want. They also have TWO rooms for te group classes, which allows them to have a great schedule with tons of classes. This is a definite upgrade!

The only complaint I have is that the sauna/steam isn't super hot, but other than that, this place is great. - by katesf on Dec 26, 2008 at 11:11 PM

It's great for my entire family, since they even have a tiny baby pool! All of the cardio machines have their own TVs! And I really enjo the Kids Club, so I can come in anytime without needing to worry about finding someone to watch the kids. The fees are a little high (about $200 a month for my family), but it's totally worth every penny. - by anonymous on Dec 26, 2008 at 10:20 PM

For a chain 24, this location is pretty good. My favorite thing here are the newer upscale treadmills which the Gold's and Todal don't have. Also, the parking here is really easy, never a headache. The Zumba class is AWESOME! I really hate going to gyms in general (machines are so boring!), but my friend dragged me to the Zumba class, and I'm really impressed. I wasn't bored at all, and it was actually FUN and didn't seem like I was working out at all! And not to mention, I got in a goot workout, too! I've seen that they offer the Zumba class at other 24 hour locations too, so I may check those out, since the price here is a little steeper than the other locations (since I'm told it's a "Super Sport" class), and I'll mainly be using it for Zumba. - by anonymous on Dec 26, 2008 at 09:59 PM

Almost impossible to get a good workout. First, I have to spend 15 minutes just waiting for a machine to even start my workout. Once I get on the machine, they limit me to only 20 minutes on it (and the other members here will watch you like a hawk, but I don't blame them since waiting is a b*tch). But what kind of workout can I get for only 20 minutes??? That's barely enough time to even get warm. Add to that the time it takes to drive here, park, drive home, and change - it takes me about an hour to get in 20 minutes of cardio, I'd rather save my $30 I pay a month and an hour of every day, and just run outside. - by katesf on Dec 25, 2008 at 07:38 PM

Things I don't like: - They only give you two big towels to shower with. I don't really need more, but it's the thought that counts. I just joined, and I was totally surprised that they have FREE CHILD CARE!!! I've been afraid that I wouldn't be able to get in as many workouts as I wanted due to the kids, but this will definitely help the problem. Also, I liked how they gave you a free session with a personal trainer when you sign up - I'm new to working out, so this really helped me figure out what I'm doing! Also, there are tons of people of different races, ages, and levels, so I don't feel out of place or like an idiot because I'm new. - by anonymous on Dec 24, 2008 at 08:04 PM

Alot of people complain about the price, but I have no issue with spending twice or three times as much as other gyms when I can see where my money is going. There are three floors, which are all air conditioned, so it never feels stuffy. The cardio machines have their own individual television so an hour long workout goes by really fast. I've only tried the spinning class, but I've heard that the pilates is really good as well. What also is great is that unlike other gyms with fat personal trainers, all of the trainers I've seen here are in shpae and good looking. Definitely a good motivator! Overall, the place has super clean equipment, a spa like locker room, excellent classes, and a restaurant with good, healthy food. - by anonymous on Dec 24, 2008 at 05:37 PM

When I went in for a tour, they didn't try to sell me on the gym or pressure me into joining at all, which made me want to the gym even more! (pestering sales people are what turns me off the most about gyms) When I signed up, they gave me a free intro training session, and Josh helped me develop a workout, and even emailed it to me so I could print it out and bring it with me! Wow! The cons: the price is a little steep (more than Equinox!), but they don't have any contracts or an initiation fee. Also, it is getting more crowded now that it's winter, so I usually need to wait for an elliptical (there are only 5 in the gym), but there are usually a few treadmills free. - by anonymous on Dec 24, 2008 at 01:21 PM

This gym smells, and sometimes you have to wait for a machine. I expect this from a gym. It bugs me when people complain that a gym smells like sweat and BO - how is it supposed to smell? Like flowers? And 99% of gyms that you go to will be crowded during peak hours. Unless you want to go buy a private gym for yourself, there's nothing you can do about that.

On the plus side for this gym, it doesn't smell nearly as bad as some other locations I've been to, the wait isn't that bad since I can watch TV, they have plenty of parking, and the staff is friendly. People who complain about this gym just don't know gyms period. - by anonymous on Dec 24, 2008 at 12:46 AM

This super sport is so much better than the super sport in Millbrae. It has a basketball court, pool, and whirlpool, all of which the Millbrae location doesn't have. This place is like the membership card natzi. They always insist you have your ID with you, or they won't let you in. I had them photocopy mine and stick it in my card holder, so I've never had an argument with them, but I've seen the rude front desk get in arguments with other patrons over it. What really annoyed me, though, is that I'm a regular here. I work out every weekday after work, and the front desk staff knows me. However, one day I left my purse at home, whihc had both my card and my ID in it. They REFUSED to let me in, even though they had seen me there the day before, and the day before that. - by tedtimmyted on Dec 23, 2008 at 04:41 PM

Hands down, the best gym in Brentwood. The equipment is all new and clean, and they have lots of them, so I never have to wait. The classes here are all great, especially the spinning one - I always sweat puddles whenever I go. They have a bunch of other amenities as well (such as a pool and basketball court), but I never use them so I can't really comment, but they look nice. - by anonymous on Dec 23, 2008 at 03:31 PM

Theres 6 rows of cardio machines, so even during peak hours, you never have to wait long for a machine, assuming puking stick to the 20 minute time limit. I really like the yoga class with Lee, but beware, this class is not for beginners. I like it because most yoga classes at gyms (rather than chains) are too simple and easy, but her class actually feels like a real workout. - by anonymous on Dec 23, 2008 at 05:40 AM

Before joining Gold's, I always thought of it as a muscle-head gym, filled with tons of huge scary looking guys on 'roids. Imagine my surprise when I took a tour of this location, and I only saw one guy who fit that description, and he wasn't even grunting loudly and drawing much attention to himself. The people here all seem really down to earth, and they all minded their own business and there weren't any "gym attention whores" - you know, the skanky girls in next to nothing clothing, or the huge muscular guys wearing tiny tshirts. - by anonymous on Dec 22, 2008 at 11:05 PM

I was hesitant to sign up here since it's on the pricier side, but now I'm so glad I did because it's the best gym I've ever been to. They have clean equipment, and lots of it, despite the small space. I really like the yoga classes, the teachers are almost as good as the ones at yoga studios. And the locker rooms! It's really clean, and I like that they stock it with all the bathroom stuff so I don't need to bring my own. - by anonymous on Dec 22, 2008 at 09:55 PM

At the risk of adding yet another positive review, and causing this place to become even more popular and crowded, here it goes: Mission Cliffs ROCKS! It is the best climbing gym in the city. I love their huge selection of routes, as well as the free classes they offer with the membership. They have so many different options for the routes: they have a wide range of difficulty levels, as well as lengths, and have bouldering options. Also, it's got a great community of people. I've met alot of new friends where who I will climb with when I see them. The sauna is an added bonus, and is great to use after a hard workout. - by anonymous on Dec 22, 2008 at 07:54 PM

It's a local owned gym, which I'm all for, opposed to the chains. That being said, this gym is really expensive - its something like $140 for an full membership, or $90 for a limited membership, where you're only allowed to go afternoons and evenings during the week, and anytime on the weekend. Also, I wish that they had better hours. Mon through Thurs are okay, but on friday they close really early at 7, so I can't get in a workout after work. Sat and Sun they close really early, too, so I feel like I need to go to the gym before I start my day, or else I may not be able to make it before they close. After 3 months, I cancelled since I just wasn't making it there enough with the early hours. - by anonymous on Dec 22, 2008 at 05:16 PM

Is it just me, or do other people here feel self conscious about running on the treadmills? They are up against the wall, so when I run, my back is turned to people. I feel so self conscious, knowing that my love handles are jiggling, and the rest of the gym is getting a front row show! (Not that they're looking). Other than that, I like the gym, since its 24 hours (which I've recently learned that not all the 24 Hour Fitnesses are in the city) and there are enough machines so I never have to wait. - by anonymous on Dec 22, 2008 at 02:41 AM

$120 a month, but worth every penny. They've got an amazing roof top pool, which, in the summertime, is solely worth the price tag. The pilates class is amazing, as are the other classes. The locker rooms are the cleanest I've ever seen and are really calming. Also, the price tag keeps alot of hoodlums out, and I get a peace of mind knowing sketchy people aren't staring at me while I'm stretching. - by anonymous on Dec 22, 2008 at 01:26 AM

Straight men who give this gym negative reviews based upon the other men here need to grow up. The gym is in the castro, what do you expect? Giving a gym in the Castro, particularly Gold's, a negative review for being filled with gay men is like giving Baskin Robbins a bad review because you don't like ice cream.

And even if you're homophobic, this is actually a decent gym.The machines here are new and top notch - the weights are new and clean, and most of the cardio machines even have their own tvs, and it's clean! - by anonymous on Dec 21, 2008 at 04:53 PM

This is a good gym for people who prefer working out late at night. They're not 24 hours, but they stay open until midnight, which is later than the other gyms around here. The crowd here is pretty good, since it seems like everyone is just focused on their own workout, rather than scoping you out.

There equipment and actual gym facilities here are great, but the locker room really ruins the whole experience for me. There's this one Korean woman who refuses to share any of the bench space. She will just lay out all of her crap on the bench, and gets really huffy when I try to move her back just two inches to the side so I can fit my towel on the bench. And then the shower temperature is never right - it's either really really hot that it scalds me, or it's luke warm. The water pipes for the shower and the toilet are hooked up together, as everytime someone flushes the toilet - lookout! - by anonymous on Dec 20, 2008 at 10:56 PM

A great neighborhood gym. It feels really intimate, in a good way - it's small, and you start to get to know everyone here. Everything here is really dedicated to working out, so you don't get alot of people who just come here to socialize and pick up girls. Also, Rachel is one of the best spin teachers I've ever met. At first, I was intimidated goign to a "Boxing Gym", since I'm a girl, and always thought boxing was a "boy's thing." My (male) friend finally convinced me to go with him to a class, and WOW. It was a really great workout, and even though it was mostly guys, I didn't feel weird or ackward at all. Since then, I've started taking Lizzy's classes, since in the end, I feel much more comfortable with a woman teacher. Lizzy is such a great teacher. The pool here is horrible. The area is so nasty, and to get in it, you need to walk through the WEIGHT ROOM. Not the locker room, but the WEIGHT ROOM. This is just plain dumb. Someone was not thinking when they designed the layout. There are trails of wet footprints and wet flip-flop prints in the hallways that connect the weight rooms, and then since people need to walk through the weight rooms, it causes them to drag all sorts of dirt into the pool area. - by anonymous on Dec 19, 2008 at 11:17 PM

This gym really sucks like all the other reviews say. Just thought I'd add one more. I joined about 5 years ago on a deal where I got 3 years for a flat fee, and then only $24 per year after that, which is why I am basically "stuck" with it. The gym is open 24 hours, but the steam room, sauana, and whirlpool close at midnight. I've heard that things get stolen alot, especially late at night, but have never had anything of mine stolen. The men's locker room is tiny, crowded, and dirty, so I avoid showering there. THE BEST WORKOUT EVER! I started coming here two months ago, going 3 times a week, and I've already lost over 10 pounds, and I can see some definition forming. This gym is snottier than Sports Club LA, Equinox, and all those other poshy gyms. There is actually a 6 MONTH WAITING LIST to get in! And once you're done waiting, you only get to go in between 9am-2pm Monday through Friday. You can't use it on the weekends or anytime at night. WTF? What is so exclusive about this place? - by anonymous on Dec 17, 2008 at 01:14 PM

Positive Review: for 3rd Street Boxing Gym
First time I came in here, I thought I was hot shit. I've been weight training for years, and I thought that as far as fitness goes, I was the best. Enter 3rd Street Boxing Gym.

This gym totally kicked my ass. I am the worst boxer in the world; I have no rhythm, no coordination, and basically no skills. However, the trainers here were really patient with me, and still made me work harder than I've ever worked before. They challenged me to a new level I never even imagined, and I could barely walk the next few days. Thank you, 3rd Street, for killing my ego, and wearing me down. - by anonymous on Dec 17, 2008 at 01:01 PM

All of the negative reviews are pretty accurate, but I like this gym because it's great for a lunch time spinning work out. It's right off Lawrence, which is super easy access from my office. Plus, they've got spinning classes at noon almost everyday! The combination of these two makes it really easy to get in a noon tim eworkout to cut my day in half. - by lotk on Dec 17, 2008 at 11:23 AM

 Positive Review: for Decathlon Club
The gym equipment is nice, but comparable to other gyms. What makes the Decathalon Club better than other clubs though, is the customer service and the atmosphere. The staff works hard to keep the club really clean, and are very helpful. The cleanliness really makes a difference. At my past gyms which were really dirty, I never felt motivated to workout, and always wanted to get out of there as quickly as possible. Here, the vibe is just great, and I look forward to going. - by anonymous on Dec 17, 2008 at 02:14 AM

Like jjj said, this is a pretty small gym. It's good for gym \"newbies\", but it just doesn't seem like enough for me. They have all the basic equipments, but sometimes I just feel like I need more... - by anonymous on Dec 16, 2008 at 11:18 PM

 Positive Review: for Planet Granite
The Sunnyvale location is sooo much better than Belmont for the following reasons: 1) Sunnyvale is so much bigger and has way more routes, with a much harder difficulty level. 2) Sunnyvale has an outdoor area, which Belmont does not. 3) They have spin classes, which Belmont doesn't. 4) The front desk staff at Sunnyvale is so much more friendly. They actually chat with me, whereas at Belmont, they were always preoccupied to even look up at me when I came in. 5) Sunnyvale actually has a parking lot, whereas at Belmont, you have to park a block away - odd. Even if you live closer to Belmont, this location is worth the extra driving time, since they are the same price. - by gmoore on Dec 16, 2008 at 10:36 PM

 Neutral Review: for Planet Granite
I live in Redwood City, so the Belmont PG makes much more sense for me to go to. However, one day my friend wanted to go check out the Sunnyvale location, and it was a world of a difference. Belmont is soooo much smaller, and doesn't have much harder routes that Sunnyvale does. I used to enjoy this location, but after going to the Sunnyvale one, I'm spoiled, and am no longer a fan. - by gmoore on Dec 16, 2008 at 10:03 PM

I love the classes here! Im not a big fan of going at it on the cardio machines for an hour (can you say "boring!"), but the classes make an hour long workout fly by. My reccomendations are yoga with Saeda, and Boxing with Tony. - by anonymous on Dec 16, 2008 at 07:55 PM

Ahh, on first impressions, this gym looks great. It's got new, nice equipment, super clean, and even pretty big for a small town. However, the rude staff and some of the other people here just really ruin the atmosphere. - by anonymous on Dec 16, 2008 at 07:14 PM

 Positive Review: for Equinox
People here come here to work out and get out. It's not a meat market like alot of the other gyms where guys don't get the hint that you don't want to be disturbed, even I've pointed at my headphones and gestured I can't hear, they still keep talking. Equinox is not like that at all. I can get in a good workout without being interupted, and it's a big plus that everything is clean and top of the line. - by mpo on Dec 16, 2008 at 06:41 PM

 Positive Review: for Club One
The facilities are clean and well-kept (way to go staff!) and I don't need to worry about greasy guys bothering me while I'm trying to work out. This location is busier than the other Club Ones in the city, most likely due to its location. My one complaint is that they don't have personal tvs on all of the cardio equipment like most of the more upscale gyms now do. - by bumba rumba on Dec 16, 2008 at 05:04 PM

Positive Review: for Club One Inc
The staff is what makes Club One top notch. I've been to other gyms before that have locker rooms with all the amenities, new machines, and towel service, but they were nowhere as nice. At Club one, they always make sure the soap, shampoo, conditioner, and lotion dispensers are full, there are plenty of clean towels available, and that the machine is well kept and clean.

The classes here are really great, and I attribute that to the awesome instructors. I've been to yoga classes before and nearly fell asleep because the teacher's routine was so boring. Here, I feel challenged and come out with a good workout everytime.

The fees may be higher than some other places, but you're really getting what you pay for. - by anonymous on Dec 16, 2008 at 02:04 PM

Positive Review: for Mariner Square Athletic Club
Best gym ever. The people here are older, (versus the younger crowds at 24 and Golds) which is why I think the gym is really clean, and the atmosphere is much nicer since theres not a bunch of rowdy grunting obnoxious people working out. Theres people of all different body types (fat, thin, fit, etc), and no one passes judgement on anyone else. I also like how the sauna is in the locker room, so there is a separate one for men and women. - by anonymous on Dec 16, 2008 at 07:08 AM

Wow, this is so cool. They have two pools with different temperatures - a "warm" pool at 83 degrees which has 5 lanes, and a "cooler" pool at 78 degrees with 4 lanes. Seems like more people prefer the warm pool. The Bay Club also has a nice sauna and steam room, which is perfect for a post-swim/workout. - by anonymous on Dec 15, 2008 at 10:34 PM

This gym is really geared for women. It's mainly cardio machines, and has a very small free weight section, where the heaviest weight is only 65 pounds. Unfortunately, t's the only gym in the area, but for a big guy like me, I feel really out of place. - by tom on Dec 15, 2008 at 10:18 PM

Negative Review: for 24 Hour Fitness
Everytime I'm here, I see 3 or 4 people standing behind the front desk just doing nothing, and yet, I never see anyone cleaning. If they would re-assign some of teh staff from doing nothing to helping clean a little, this place might be a little cleaner (ie. better). The gym has poor ventilation, especially in the cardio area. They have a bunch of separate rooms for the machines, not sure how they're categorized. One room (the first one when you come in) has weight machines and a few cardio. The cardio room has only cardio equipment. Then, there's another room with a combination of free weights and weight machines. Then in the VERY back (hidden room) are the free weights. What a confusing layout. - by anonymous on Dec 15, 2008 at 12:53 PM

The biggest plus of this place is that it's not a meat market. To the reviewer before, everyone has to start somewhere! - LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION!
- Super clean
- The spinning class is awesome
- They have more knick knack equipment such as bosu balls, medicine balls, and a bunch of other things that I can't even name than I even know existed!
- Very spacious so I don't feel crowded when working out
- The steam room smells great
- The locker room is nicer than my own bathroom

Let Me Count the Ways I hate this gym...
1) There is no room to stretch after you work out. You just gotta find some room in between the machines, and hope nobody steps on you. You can't even go in the Group X room, since they lock it when theres no classes.
2) It smells. Like, worse than most 24s.
3) It is so incredibly small, I almost always have to wait.
4) The instructors are mean!!! And the ones who aren't mean, are just bad instructors. - by denise on Dec 14, 2008 at 11:51 PM

The cardio room is horrible. The machines are all cramped so closely together, I can almost feel the person next to me sweating on me. I was a member here for 2 years, and loved it. I think they upgrade the equipment every year, so it's always new! They have the best locker room, by far.  Positive Review: for CrossFit Santa Cruz
I hate gyms, but LOVE Crossfit. It's not like a typical gym where you just go, listen to your ipod and slave away on a machine. They are class based with great teachers that make sure you're doing all your movements correctly. The people and environment are really friendly and supportive, and no one passes judgment. Crossfit is so much better than going to a normal gym since you get motivated by the trainers and the other students around you. - by anonymous on Dec 14, 2008 at 09:39 PM

The other reviews are right about this gym being a meathead. It seems like half the people there aren't even working out, just standing around and getting in the way, socializing. Aside from that, the gym itself is a waste of space. The tiny pool (only 2 lanes) is so gross, no wonder it's so small, not like people would want to swim in there anyway. The location is horrible. The fact that it's in a mall makes the parking really annoying, and it takes forever to get in and out. I can't think of one nice thing to say about this place. - by anonymous on Dec 14, 2008 at 07:26 PM

It is crazy to call this a super sport and expect people to pay the extra $29/mo for this. The only difference between this and the regular 24 is that they have towel service and newer machines. If you're a man that likes to get hit on by other men, go here. If you prefer not to get harased, find somewhere else.

Everytime I go here, I keep my own personal space and try to avoid eye contact with anyone, but that doesn't stop the guys from hitting on me and making rude, unwelcomed comments. Once, as I got up from the bench after doing a set of presses, I caught this guy leering at me with a huge pervy smile on his face. I quickly looked away, but that didn't prevent him from coming over and asking me if I was in the mood for some "chocolate milk." I've brought up this issue with the manager, and all he said was "I know that is a problem here", but didn't even offer me a solution or any way to fix it! - by anonymous on Dec 14, 2008 at 12:04 PM

What impresses me about this gym is that the weights are always restacked, and I never have to go around looking for them like I do at the other 24s. I hardly doubt that it's because the patrons here are just more responsible - I think that the staff here actually does their job and restacks the weights. Way to go! I even see them cleaning, too! That's probably why the bathroom and the machines are cleaner than most. - by anonymous on Dec 14, 2008 at 08:39 AM

Ehh. The facility itself is really nice, and so are the staff, but the patrons here are questionable. There are tons of old people who come here that seem to have nothing else to do but talk talk talk. It really ruins my workout when I'm in the middle of a set, and these people are just standing there talking, hinting for me to take off my headphones. I agree with most of the reviews for this location, but I think people are being a little to harsh.

The parking is bad after work, but honestly, I don't mind having to park farther and needing to walk, since that's what I'm goign to the gym for - to MOVE. Kinda ironic that people are complaining about having to walk an extra 5 minutes when they are going to the GYM. Plus, the parking is only bad after work, I've never had a problem in the morning beforehand.

the place is pretty dirty like everyone says, so i guess I can't really defend that part. It does seem to be cleaner in the morning before work, though, so if cleanliness is a problem for you, just go earlier.

I think some people are exaggeratin over the grssness of the locker rooms. They're dirty, but nothing super nasty that I haven't seen at any other 24s.

For the classes, I've tried a couple of the TKB classes, and they rock! I haven't taken Mary's class, but Stephen's class was a great workout! - by anonymous on Dec 12, 2008 at 09:49 PM

What sold me on signing up for the Invisible Gym was that it advocates an overall healthy lifestyle as opposed to unhealthy quick fixed to lose weight quick. The whole concept is that it offers mobile personal training, so I can to work out in my home which makes it really convenient. My trainer Machelle created a personalized workout for me using the items I had in my house. Is this an actual gym-gym, or is it a tiny ghetto hotel gym? It is small, has old machines (like the ones you can buy from Goodwill for $100). They don't have a pool or steam room, but have a tanning bed? huh? I'd stay clear of it though, since it's probably as dirty as the rest of the gym, and you'll catch some sort of disease. - by anonymous on Dec 12, 2008 at 11:14 AM

After gaining over 30 pounds in college, I decided to start getting back in shape. I tried a couple other gyms, and hey seemed like they were filled with huge muscular guys, which reallly intimidated me. This gym is the opposite - it's really low-key gym where you can be out of shape and not embarrassed. Everyone is really friendly, so I never feel intimidated by anyone. Sure, there are some people in really great shape, but also some folks more like me. Plus, the staff is really nice and helpful, and will answer any questions I have and always take the time to explain how to use things, unlike the big chain gyms where they just don't care. - by janet on Dec 12, 2008 at 08:03 AM

The SF Bay Club is so much better than my own HOME in Marin. They have two pools which are both cleaner and bigger than my pool. I really like that they have a mini work out room in the LOCKER ROOM, so I can get a quick work out in on the days that I'm in a rush. The instructors are great too. They know exactly how hard to push you without being over the top. - by anonymous on Dec 11, 2008 at 08:44 PM

It's huge and spread out, so I never feel stuffy or overcrowded, the dumbells go up to 120 pounds (this is the only place I've seen it that high), and plus, there's a Safeway, Walgreens, and Trader Joes all about 100 feet away. one stop shopping! - by anonymous on Dec 11, 2008 at 09:25 AM

If you like to see bony old gross men walk around aimlessly butt naked except for their socks, the men's locker room is the place for you. If you don't want to puke, avoid the men's locker room at all costs. - by anonymous on Dec 11, 2008 at 08:12 AM

Positive Review: for Club Sport of Fremont
This is definitely the nicest gym in Fremont, and even though the prices are a tad high, it's definitely worth it. The machines have their own tvs on them, so I go when I know my favorite shows are on, and just watch while I do the elliptical. The time goes by soooo fast! - by anonymous on Dec 11, 2008 at 06:30 AM

Positive Review: for Bay Club Marin
I was the biggest disbeliever of this gym before. Never in a million years did I ever think this gym was worth the money... until I tried it out.

I got a guest pass, and am so amazed by this gym. They have so many machines, most of which have their own TVs on it. They have towel service, so I don't need to worry about bringing my own. The best part were the locker rooms. It felt like a spa. I especially liked the guava scented shampoo and soap in the lockers.

I definitely felt like I got the 5 star treatment here, without the rich snobby atmosphere. I'm not sure if I'll join, since prices are a little high for me right now, but I definitely do love this gym. - by anonymous on Dec 10, 2008 at 10:52 PM

Pam is the best spinning teacher ever! She does the Tues Thurs 6am classes. It's hard to get up, but her class is so great, it makes it worth it. She actually knows what she's doing, unlike most of the group x instructors here. - by anonymous on Dec 10, 2008 at 07:38 PM

I love everything about Club One - the staff, the equipment, the locker rooms... The equipment is clean, and I've rarely seen anything broken. I love the locker rooms, since they are stocked with soap, shampoo, conditioners, razors, cotton, qtips... more stuff than my own bathroom has! Oh, and the location is great! Perfect for grabbing a bite to eat after your work out. - by mono81 on Dec 10, 2008 at 07:22 PM

I love this gym! It's got pretty much anything I could ask for. They have cardio machines, weights, pools, tennis courts, squash, and baskeball courts, all in one place. They even have a discount for people under 30, which make the club affordable for me. - by hinkin on Dec 10, 2008 at 04:37 PM

Neutral Review: for 24 Hour Fitness Active
Yay! They just did a mini renovation and brought in new bikes for the spinning classes which are really smooth. They also switched out the TVs to LCDs, which make it look a little more modern. Other than that, the equipment is pretty old, so it's not like the new tvs really help out that much. - by anonymous on Dec 10, 2008 at 02:18 PM

Negative Review: for 24 Hour Fitness Super Sport
The gym is clean, and the staff is okay, but what really bugs me is that they need more channels on the tvs on the ellipticals. That was one of the main reasons I signed up for this new super gym, but it's basically pointless since I can't watch any of the channels I want. - by anonymous on Dec 10, 2008 at 12:31 PM

Positive Review: for Bally Total Fitness
This is one of the better Ballys. They have a pool and a sauna (not all of them have), and it's cleaner than most. My husband also likes the free weights section, since it seems to be bigger here than other locations. Also, they have a child care, so we can bring the kids in if we want to work out together. - by anonymous on Dec 10, 2008 at 11:21 AM

 Positive Review: for Gold's Gym
After making excuse after excuse, I finally joined gold's, and I have no regrets. I was worried about it being too expensive, but I got a corporate rate for only $29 a month. Also, since I'm a larger woman, I've always been afraid of being made fun of by the others who arein better shape. Well, since this location is mostly gays, they don't even give me a second glance, allowing me to just hide away and get to my work out in. Lastly, i was afraid that since i travel so much, i wouldn't be able to get there as much as I lke, but since my membership lets me access any Golds gym, so no matter where I am, there will be a location near me. - by anonymous on Dec 10, 2008 at 09:30 AM

Positive Review: for 24 Hour Fitness Express
I love this gym! It's small, but has everything I need, and I can get in and out very quickly and easily. It's never crowded, even during peak hours - the only time when it gets a little crowded is Tuesday mornings during the step class, which is great. Also, it's mostly women here, which makes me feel much more comfortable than working out in a sea of men. - by anonymous on Dec 10, 2008 at 08:33 AM

Club One is the first gym I've ever joined, and I've been perfectly content. I love how they give you as many towels as you need, and all of the different classes they offer. I'm not a full member of the gym - Once in awhile, I pay the nominal $10 for a day pass which lets me use the squash courts (it also gives me access to the rest of the gym, but I'm not big into working out at a gym). The squash courts are clean and well kept, and best of all, the $10/day is a steal! - by anonymous on Dec 09, 2008 at 11:17 PM

They don't have a separate room for the group classes! It's so odd to be here working out, and be able to hear the instructor yelling out instructions to the class. This is a small location, but also a small crowd, so that's fine. the staff is nice. - by anonymous on Dec 09, 2008 at 10:13 PM

How ironic that there is a giant view of the Equinox right across the street. It's like one of those inspirational movie clips, where the poor kid living in a ghetto run down crackhouse dreams of living in a huge white CLEAN house. I first signed up for here because I was broke and it was cheap, but cancelled because it is a good example of "you get what you pay for." This place is absolutely gross! The toilets are always backed up, and the air conditioning was broken half the place, so it was really smelly, with no circulation! I tried complaining numerous times, and no one really cares or listens. - by anonymous on Dec 09, 2008 at 01:57 AM

This is a great gym. They've got clean weights and cardio machines, as well as low enough prices to keep me here, even though I prefer to run outside. Only gripe is that they only have ONE shower here. I never use the showers, so I guess it's not really a gripe... just kinda weird. - by anonymous on Dec 08, 2008 at 10:20 PM

The gym is cheap both pricewise and quality wise. It is so frigging dirty, and the staff is rude and doesnt even acknoledge you when you walk in. Alot of the equipment is either broken or squeaky. And the crowds here after work are so bad that I dont even bother going at that time anymore, because it is impossible to get in a good workout then. - by anonymous on Dec 08, 2008 at 09:20 PM

I agree that this is missing alot of the stuff even normal 24 hours have, but I give i tmajor props for having a male and a female separated sauna. When using the coed saunas at other locations, I always feel a little creeped out walking around the men who just leer at me in my bathing suit. This lets me enjoy my sauna after a hard workout without needing to worry about them. It also means that I can just go in the buff on the days I forget my swim suit - by kathy on Dec 08, 2008 at 08:41 PM

I feel like such a piece of meat here. There's constantly a group of guys that just stand there to oggle the girls. I've never seen them working out... just standing, leering at girls and trying to mack on them. The only reason I still deal with this gym is because I love Mary's TKB class. I just try to get in and out without too many gross men creeping me out on the way in and out. - by cassie on Dec 08, 2008 at 07:21 PM

Is it bad if I love this place so much that I still go here, even though I graduated 3 years ago?

Honestly, the RSF is far superior than any other gym.

It gets crowded in the evenings, but all gyms do. What I like about the RSF is that they have a sign in sheet for the cardio machines, so you can go and do something else while you wait. Other gyms I've tried, you just have to stand there and wait for someone to get off.

It's got 3 stories and is really spacious. They have so many different classes from yoga, to spinning, to kickboxing. They have lap pools and a basketball court and a squash court.

I love going here, and it makes it better since I can relive my college days! - by anonymous on Dec 08, 2008 at 03:17 PM

Equinox is great. They have top notch excercise instructors and personal trainers. Molly's yoga class will really work your muscles. They have a XLR8 interval class which really kicks my ass, but it's only at the SF location for now =( The working staff is also really attentive, they will go around and offer towels to me as I'm doing my cardio! - by anonymous on Dec 08, 2008 at 01:23 PM

Positive Review: for Mission Cliffs Climbing & Fitness
I like climbing here since the people are friendly, the vibe is pretty low key, and the cardio area is usually pretty empty so I can get in a quick session to warm up my muscles before I start climbing. The parking isn't as bad as other people make it out to be. It's not any worse than other parts of SF. The people complaining must be from a different area... - by frankie on Dec 08, 2008 at 12:12 PM

Even though I don't expect much from 24 Hour Fitness, this one sucks more than usual. List of things you'll need to spend a great amount of time seraching for: 1) Parking. 2) An unused machine. 3) A clean spot in the gym. The first two, are possible if you look long enogh. The third is impossible. - by anonymous on Dec 08, 2008 at 09:43 AM

This place is always packed after work, but that's just a sign that they're doing something right. It's huge and has tons of routes that they regularly change, so it never gets boring. They also have tons classes. The 5:45 yoga seems to be the most popular, as it's always full and they have to turn people away. They even have an outdoor part, which will be really nice to use in the summer. - by anonymous on Dec 08, 2008 at 12:03 AM

SCLA is far better than the Bay Club and Equinox. It literally has everything. They have clean, functional equipment for everything you could ever imagine. Each machine has it's own TV, so you can choose what you want to watch. They have a huge list of classes, the yoga is my favorite. They have a huge pool and basketball court, which I don't use, but it's nice to know they're there. The locker rooms are amazing! The facility is big and clean. I never have to wait to use a shoewr, and rarely have to wait for a cardio machine. Of all the 24s in the San Jose/Cupertino area, this is the cleanest. Since it's an Express, it's a little smaller than the other ones, but it's not a big deal since they have the machines I need, and since they don't have a pool or other fancy amenities, it seems to keep the crowds away, which is a plus. - by anonymous on Dec 07, 2008 at 05:42 PM

A dirty, old, tiny ass gym, where ironically, the only redeeming thing about it is the big parking lot. This gym is great for two things: 1) the treadmills with the fans on the side, and 2) the Lifestyle ellipticals that are along the window in the weight room (not in the separate cardio room). Even though I upgraded to the new Super Sport facility across the parking lot, I will sometimes come back to this old one just to use those two machines. I was talking to the maintenance guy here, and he told me that they haven't made those ellipticals for over 10 years now (which is why the new 24s don't have them). What a pity... - by anonymous on Dec 06, 2008 at 06:29 PM

When I went in, I took a beginners belaying class, where they taught me all the basics. The teacher was very patient and encouraging, which helped me stick with it, even though I got really frustrated, and felt like certain moves were impossible.

I don't know if I'll make climbing a routine thing, but it's definitely a fun way to spend a rainy afternoon once in awhile!

Vibe here is a little stuck up. It's mostly an older crowd, and since I'm in my mid 20s, I often feel as if they're looking at me, wondering what I'm doing here, like I'm too young (meaning poor) to be here. Plus, the people who work out are unfriendly. I once asked a woman if she was finished with a machine (she had just gotten off of it, so she was clearly done, but I just asked to be polite), and she just scoffed at me, as if she was too good to even talk to me. - by jennc on Dec 05, 2008 at 06:17 PM

 Positive Review: for Gold's Gym
Pros:
1) The men here are total meatheads, and seem to be really intent on working out, which is good because it means I'm not constantly being oogled like I was at 24.
2) It's right off the freeway, giving me easy access on the way home from work
3) The classes are great, and they have a reservation system so there is never a disagreement over who gets the space
4) It's really really cheap.
5) It's open late

Cons:
1) Can get a little crowded after work, but I think that's typical of most gyms.
2) The bathrooms are in a different building... kinda odd.

Overall, this is much better than the other options in the area if you don't want to pay the absurdly high $100+ a month for Equinox. - by ahoppe on Dec 05, 2008 at 05:11 PM

It's hard to believe that best gym in Walnut Creek is in a hotel! First, the equipment is top notch. They have tons of sparkling clean machines, and it is never crowded, so I've never had to wait for a machine. The machines even all have their own TVs so you can watch while you work out. The weight room is really nice, but I don't know too much about that since I don't do weight training. They also have huge pools and basketball and raquetball courts, which again, I don't use, but they look really nice. Next, the facility layout is really nice. They have these huge windows everywhere, so there's lots of natural sunlight in the summer, which really energize me to workout. Finally, the locker rooms. They are very spa like and comfortable, and really clean. - by anonymous on Dec 05, 2008 at 04:14 PM

I feel soooo spoiled by the new line of Super Sport gyms 24 has been opening! I joined this one right when it opened back in July, and it compares with the more elite gyms like Club One and Equinox. They have marbled walls in the locker rooms, towel service, and lcd tvs on each individual machine (something that Equinox doesn't even have!). As poor as I am from the SPCLA sucking out $160 every month from my wallet, I still feel great. Cecile's yoga class always leaves my body the perfect amount of sore so that it feels good. My friend took me with her for a guest work out, and now I know what it would feel like to be rich. The gym itself is great - I mean, it's a gym. They have machines that work. Not much to comment on there. But the locker room is undescribable. It's really spacious and so calm and serene and smells like eucalyptus (sp?). They have every bathroom accessory you could need, from razors to Q-tips to shampoo to unlimited towels. And you know what? I ended up liking the location. I don't think I'll go back here because it's out of my way, but it's definitely a nice place. I was surprised at how clean it was, after hearing all the rumors about how people just have sex everywhere. Maybe they save that for the men's locker room, which I didn't see. She set me up with a beginners class where the instructor first taught us basics in a big group, and then worked with each of us individually on belaying and even stayed with us for the first few climbs to make sure we were okay. He was very nice and informative, and never got impatient. - by anonymous on Dec 03, 2008 at 01:57 PM

This gym has a super family oriented feel. Everyone is really nice and friendly, and the instructors seem to know everyone's name. I've tried the Jiu Jitsu and Krav classes, and want to try them all. When I first started here, I had no idea what I was doing, so don't be afraid if you're just starting - the instructor is very attentive to beginners, while paying attention to the more advanced people as well. - by anonymous on Dec 03, 2008 at 11:32 AM

I got my first taste of meat head hell when I walked into the free weights room here. The weights are in a separate room as the cardio, and as soon as I walked in, i was surrounded by about 20 guys, who all turned their eyes on me. I did maybe 2 sets and got the hell out of there. - by anonymous on Dec 03, 2008 at 11:28 AM

 Positive Review: for Gold's Gym
This is a great gym for single people! There are SO MANY HOT PEOPLE HERE!!! Around early 20s to late 30s...

Other pros include:
- Alot of machines, rarely a wait (most I've waited is about 5 minutes during the peak time after work)
- Unlike other chain gyms (AHEM 24 Hr!), the staff is actually friendly!
- The belly dancing class is great! - by cassie on Dec 03, 2008 at 12:00 AM

Negative Review: for 24 Hour Fitness Sport
The damn busiest gym I've ever seen. If you want a treadmill at peak hours, you have to STAND IN LINE to get one. No sign up sheet, you just have to stand there.

Did I mention that while you're standing there the wonderful smells you get to inhale? Take your pick - BO, piss, sewage, mildew... they've got it all mixed in one wonderful aroma.

And while you're standing in line, taking in the aroma, keep your guard up. Some of the men who go here are really shady. It's like they're on steroids, or method, or maybe a combination of both. I've witnessed at least a handful of scuffles.

So yeah. Don't go here, unless you want your workout to consist of standing, plugging your nose, and keeping your guard up. - by anonymous on Dec 02, 2008 at 09:00 PM

The fact that the fees are only $10 per month with no contract is the downfall of this gym. The cheap price brings in sooo many people, most of whom don't know what they're doing. The gym is pretty small, and it gets crowded. What makes it worse is that most of the crowd is completely clueless and just wander around, toying with machines, taking forever to figure out how to use it while people have to wait around for them to finish. You definitely get what you pay for here - which is nothing. - by cruzj on Dec 02, 2008 at 06:37 PM

 Positive Review: for Gold's Gym
For a chain gym, the Gold's location is as much as anyone could ask for. They have a big spacious layout with newer equipment, that is rarely out of order. Its not a meat market like some other Golds, so people work out and don't waste alot of time chit chatting, so theres not much wating around for machines. My favorite Golds around here. - by anonymous on Dec 02, 2008 at 04:30 PM

A great gym! I go in the mid morning, and there is rarely anyone there. The machines are nice, and I like that they have alot of big windows so I get natural light. The location is good too, since it's right off the train stop.

If you sign up though, just beware that Ballys will trap you in a 3 year plan, and you can't cancel before that, so you're stuck. If you want to stick it out for that long, go for it! - by anonymous on Dec 02, 2008 at 03:16 PM

Renaissance Clubsport is such a nice luxurious gym, I would have expected the people here to be snooty and look down on me because I am neither rich, nor in good shape. But they don't, which is why I like this gym so much. Everyone is really friendly, and they've never looked at me, or anyone like we don't belong. I can't get enough of Crossfit! They got me back in shape after taking a 3 year pause from working out. When I first singed up, they started me out with a trainer, and when I completed that, I moved on to the classes. They have a huge variety of classes, which are all fun and the instructors are great. - by anonymous on Dec 02, 2008 at 09:07 AM

Crossfit workout is one hell of a workout. Anyone who even finishes this workout deserves a pat on the back. I'm in pretty decent shape, I run about 10-15 miles per week, but I was NOT ready or expecting this. Don't get me wrong, it's not one of those impossible routines where only super in shape people can do it. The instructors are just so great that they know exactly how hard to push you to maximize your workout. Try this out- you'll sweat, you'll be sore, but you'll feel damn good after it's over. - by anonymous on Dec 02, 2008 at 02:54 AM

Negative Review: for 24 Hour Fitness Active
I'm not super high maintenance. I expect gyms to smell, there may be waits at peak times, and that the staff getting paid minimum wage may be grumpy. Yet, I still can't get over how crappy this Berkeley 24 is.

The crowds here are like no other, and the people get really really bitchy with you. Some of the people will just stand two feet from you and stare at you until you feel so uncomfortable, you just get off.

I took a TKB class with some woman who didn't even know the routines and kept starting over. Don't teach us if you don't know it yourself.

They play the same stupid songs over and over. They have maybe 10 songs in rotation, and then it starts over. I realize that this is easily fixed by bringing my own music and headphones, but this just bugs me, they must be REALLY lazy not to add more songs. - by nicola on Dec 01, 2008 at 10:13 PM

I love the fact that the student rates here are only $35 a month. The only other gyms I could find for that little were chain gyms like 24 Hour, but Golden Gate Fitness is so much better. On my quest to try out all the 24s in the SF area, I trekked my ass all the way across town to try out this one, and it was definitely not worth it. When I got there, my mood was already dampened by having to weave through all the damn tourists. Then, one of the trainers actually tries to sign me up, WHILE I'm WORKING OUT!!! I'm huffing and puffing on the elliptical, with my headphones on, and he comes up to me and starts asking me all these questions about my goals, what's stopping me from reaching them, etc. The staff definitely needs to learn some manners, it totally ruined my whole experience.

Other than that, the gym was actually pretty clean, cleaner than most of the other 24s in SF. But that trainer just ruined it for me. - by denise on Nov 30, 2008 at 08:29 PM

Though pricey, you won't find a better gym in the city. The place is clean, and the staff is constantly working to keep it that way. The selection of classes suck! First, there's no classes on Sunday! Why do they not put any classes on Sunday, when that is when most people have free time? Then, they have so many stupid dancing type classes. Who the hell wants to do these? Idiots, that's who. I tried taking one of them, and the instructor had no idea what she was doing, and clearly neither did anyone else in the class. Everyone was moving around ackwardly, looking at each other for clues, and the instructor did nothing to help us. Other than the classes, this place is dirty, the staff is rude, instructors are retarded. I figured it the locker room was crap, than those superficial girly girls wouldn't go there. What a mess!

The entire men's locker room is a urinal. There's piss all over the floors, and it stinks. I think the people here are too 'roided up to know any better. The guys are so aggro, I've seen them throw the weights around really pissed off over who knows.

After work, the place gets really crowded. The weights get really disorganized, and you can't find a single thing you're looking for.

The ventilation is horrible, which only adds to the smell wafting out of the men's locker room. - by anonymous on Nov 28, 2008 at 09:01 AM

 Positive Review: for Club One
This gym is nice, but it doesn't measure up to the other Club Ones I've been to. They have all the same things that other Club Ones do - the free towels, a stocked locker room, nice staff, and clean equipment. However, the building itself is really ugly and dirty.

The staff keeps the locker room as clean as they can, but there are just parts of it that no matter what you do, it's goign to stay dirty. There are spots all over the walls and ceilings, maybe from rain damage? The water pressure here is horrible, it comes out so hard it almost hurts, and since the curtains are sliding plastic pieces of crap, sometimes the shower nozzle will just blow them right open.

If you're a member of Club One, I recommend you go to the one in Santana Row or on Skyport - this location is really not worth the high dues you pay. - by anonymous on Nov 28, 2008 at 01:47 AM

I'm not as enthusiastic about this place as everyone else is. The parking is a little annoying and takes some time to find. TAhe employees at the front weren't as friendly and energetic as everyone else has said. When I told them this was my first time, they didn't seem interested in helping me out, all they did was hand me a sheet with the classes for beginners and went back to their conversation they were having.

I ended up taking an introductory course for $28. The instructor was really patient and easy-to-follow. They do have new, clean machines, but what's the point when a bunch of them are always broken (and take DAYS to get fixed!), and I have to wait for one? Plus, the Group X room is TINY. I took a TBK kickboxing class, and the room was so small, they actually had to close it off to people coming in, and for those of us who were in there, we were basically breathing down everyone's neck. They have great climbing walls and a great community, but the facility itself sucks. It's almost like you're in a basement or warehouse - they have tiny windows, and almost no light, making the place really gloomy. The carpet is also old, which makes the place seem really run down. They have a gym and yoga classes here, but I would go to a real gym/yoga studio for those. The yoga prices are the same as a yoga studio, but the instructors aren't as good. Also, the gym is falling apart. The floor is even slanted in there, so if you put a dumbell on the floor, it ROLLS! - by anonymous on Nov 23, 2008 at 07:19 PM

The customer service here is horrible. It seems like all of the staff is under 30, and they are both clueless and rude. Whenever I have a simple question (ie. "What are your Thanksgiving hours", or "when will the men be done working in the locker room"), they get annoyed that I'm interupting their gossip time and just give me a "I don't know." Also, the place reeks. Which makes sense since the staff is probably too lazy to clean. - by anonymous on Nov 23, 2008 at 06:44 PM

Since there are enough reviews about the gym itself, I'll use my time to talk about the ORGANIC VEGAN juice bar! It's simply amazing. The prices are a little high, but its well worth it, since even the cups and straws are made of organic biodegradable materials! They make everything fresh to order. Theres a variety of juices, goji berry drinks, and different kinds of shots with different purposes. They also have these granola balls that taste great! Plus, the people working here are really knowledgeable, and I even chatted with one of the girls working here for about 5 minutes about their products and what all the different juices and shots did for my body. This beats any health store! - by cassie on Nov 23, 2008 at 05:26 PM

I'm not picky about gyms. All I need is a precor elliptical, and I'm good to go. I don't even shower there, so that doesn't matter. Yet, when the super sport opened down the road, I decided to pay the extra $20/mo for it just to use the lone elliptical. Why? The parking here SUCKS. It takes me at least 10 minutes just circling and circling looking for it. It gives me a headache, and by the time I find it, I feel like I've wasted all my energy looking for parking, that I'm no longer in the mood to workout. - by anonymous on Nov 22, 2008 at 11:40 PM

Reasons why I like this place, and it's worth every penny of the monthly fee: - The club is clean, like sushi grade fish clean. - Everyone who works out here is super hot. - No cell phone policy. There is nothing more annoying than trying to work out while the person next to you is having a loud annoying conversation. - It's right near my work, so I can get in a quick lunch workout if I'm feelng lazy and can't wake up in the morning - by anonymous on Nov 22, 2008 at 09:16 PM

ohhh it makes me shudder just thinking of this place. It is sooooo gross, my hands feel nasty just touching a machine. It seems like there is an inch of bacteria and order caked onto the handrails of all the machines and weights. Plus, there is always always a wait to use the machines. This means I get to stand around and waste my time to get dirty. And it's not like I can even get clean from washing myself in the locker rooms, they just make me feel even dirtier. I was happy while I was a member here, but now I hate it. Why? Because it is impossible to cancel my membership. They hound you and hound you to join, but as soon as I wanted to cancel, it was impossible to get anyone to help me. First, I called the gym and asked to speak to someone about cancelling. The woman told me that I had to speak to a manager, but he was out and she asked to take a message. I never heard back from him, so I called again the next day. Again, I asked for the manager. The person asked me what I was calling about, and i said I wanted to cancel. Again, they told me the manager was out, and would take a message. And AGAIN, no returned call. I tried again the next day and asked for a manager. This time, i said I was calling regarding setting up a corporate membership for my company. They put the manager on right away. I didn't really know what to say, so I hung up, but got in my car and drove my ass over there, knowing the manager was there. When I went there, the manager said I had to talk to one of the membership counselors to cancel, but they were all with clients and i hate to wait! By now, I was soooo frustrated, but was getting close. After waiting around, and refusing to leave, they finally canceled my account, but it never shouldve been this difficult. - by anonymous on Nov 21, 2008 at 08:23 PM

They have staff that goes around cleaning hte equipment after you're done. You def don't see that at chain gyms. I mainly do cardio, so I can't really assess the weights section, but I've seen alot of big muscular men lifting there, so if they have a body like that, I'm sure that section is good. - by x77 on Nov 14, 2008 at 08:03 PM

What irks me are the showers in the women's locker room. They don't have normal shower doors or curtains, but its a wall that you have to walk around to get to each stall. This means that you cant even tell if anyone is using the shower, unless you go walk around the wall, and peep in on them showering. I also like that the people here don't really bother / stare at me when I work out here. - by anonymous on Nov 10, 2008 at 09:15 PM

I feel super intimidated just walking in here. It's a total meathead gym. 90% of it is filled with huge, muscular meathead guys who could break a little girl like me in half. I like the gym because it's close to my work, within my price range, and it's got new and clean equipment, but I could do without the meathead atmosphere. - by anonymous on Nov 10, 2008 at 10:46 AM

A great, no frills gym. Come in, work out out in peace, and leave. If you need the frills, go elsewhere though, since they don't have steam, sauna, pool, etc that the other big "spa like" gyms do. - by anonymous on Nov 09, 2008 at 07:58 PM

I love the weight room here. They've got tons and tons of free weights and machines, it's every lifter's dream. Even during the peak times, you rarely need to share. I love that the machines here are new and clean. I love the Zumba class. I love the new bikes they have for Spinning. I love almost every thing about this gym... except that they don't have that many channels on the TVs attached to the cardio machines. They have less than 10 channels, and 3 of them are some form of ESPN! Other than that, it's great... plus, my son loves the arcade games in teh kid's center! - by glim on Nov 08, 2008 at 10:32 PM

This location is really spacious with lots of cardio machines. I've never felt crowded on or rushed because people were waiting for a machine. One of the best gyms in SF located inside one of the best hotels in SF (Four Seasons).

They give you two free personal training sessions when you join, and the trainers are HOT. There is nothing like having a hot petite blond girl with perfect abs to get me in shape, because I will do ANYTHING she says. Too bad the training sessions are gone, but I've still got my beery belly.

The equipment is brand new and state of the art. There are enough machines there so I never have to wait.

The locker rooms are gorgeous, and they aren't filled by pervy men checking out all the other men. I never feel like I need to protect my junk in here.

Oh, and they have a juice bar which makes a killer peanut butter banana smoothie, which is my regular breakfast I grab after my workout on the way to work.

Note: The one downside is that the sales people are really pushy. They will contnue to call you until you sign up, so I wouldn't reccomend getting a free pass to try it out unless you're pretty sure you want to join. It's noth worth the headache. - by bhinkin on Nov 03, 2008 at 12:21 PM

Oh, 24, let me count the ways in which I despise you:
1) Smells like someone died... and if they don't get rid of that smell, more people will.
2) Alot of the machines are broken, and it takes days to fix.
3) The machines that are working are sticky and squeaky
4) The employees are incredibly unhelpful and don't give a rats ass about anything except what happened last night on The Hills
5) The locker room is so gross, I don't even want to take off my pants to pee, let alone all my clothes to shower
6) Dirty! (it deserves to be said twice)

So the list goes on and on... but I don't want to waste anymore of my time talking about this waste of space gym. - by cassie on Oct 27, 2008 at 09:24 PM

This club is really small, so it's often crowded, and the machines are way too close to each other it makes me a little uncomfortable. It seems like alot of people come here to socialize, as well. That doesn't really bother me, just making an observation. I don't like the fact that it's in Santa Row, though, since it means I have to deal with mall crowds, and it takes forever to get in and out of this location. The elevator to get to the club (it's on the third floor of some building) is extremely slow, so you need to take the stairs. - by anonymous on Oct 26, 2008 at 08:10 PM

I recently had to cancel since our company stopped subsidizing our gym costs. Oh, how I will miss tihs place. I love the eucalyptus infused steam room. The cardio machines never have a wait, and I can stay on for at least an hour, and no one cares. They have soooo many classes, I can literally walk in any time of the day and there will be a class offered. The only con about the Equinox is that I'd expect an upscale gym to have TVs on each individual machine, but they don't. They actually chat with me, whereas at Belmont, they were always preoccupied to even look up at me when I came in. 5) Sunnyvale actually has a parking lot, whereas at Belmont, you have to park a block away - odd. When I heard about a special they were having - $20 a MONTH with no initiation fee or contract, I thought it was too good to be true. And it really was.

After going here for less than two weeks, I quickly learned it's not even worth that price. Everything here is disgusting. The locker rooms are comparable with the bathrooms in BART. But at least BART bathrooms have paper towels. Well, I take that back. 24 has paper towels... but they're sweaty paper towels people use to wipe off machines and just leave everywhere.

Half the machines are broken, and there is always a line of people waiting to use the few working ones. I can run outside on the street with no wait for free.

The sound system is all messed up. It's either too loud, or just screechy, so I come out of here with a giant headache.

It's only $20 a month, but I am not even gettiny that money's worth. - by anonymous on Oct 13, 2008 at 01:58 PM

They kept charging me after I cancelled! I first tried to cancel my membership back in August. They told me that since I had paid for the last month's dues upfront when I joined, I could continue using my membership up until the end of Setptember, and I would not be billed. WRONG! When I got my credit card bill for Septmber, they had charged me the $32 monthly fee. I went into the gym and talked to the dumb ass sales rep about this. He had the balls to accuse me of never cancelling! He actually said "if you cancelled, why did you keep using the gym?" Because I had already paid for the last month! After escalating this issue to the manager, it seems to have stopped automatically charging me, but I still have yet to receive a refund on my wrongly charged $32, because I "continued to use the gym after i cancelled". - by anonymous on Nov 30, 1999 at 12:00 AM
